When it Rains, it Falls!

When it Rains, it Falls!

Rain. We’ve seen a lot of it recently on the West Coast of Canada. More than usual.  We need rain – it’s a good thing. It brings life to bloom and is part of the seasonal cycle.  However, it can also make tripping and slipping pretty easy, too.  According to Statistics Canada in their report ‘Injuries in Canada: Insights from the Canadian Health Survey’:

“The main causes of injuries were falls and overexertion.  This is noteworthy since falls are the most common cause of injury hospitalizations in Canada”.

We know that falls can occur for a variety of reasons: physical activities, household chores, workplace hazards, to name just a few.  Most of us are aware of the risks around us and we try to be as careful as we can.  Sometimes, we just aren’t paying enough attention.  In the wet weather, injuries occur more frequently and so we wanted to give you our top tips to keep you safe:

Walking in the rain

  1. Make sure to have appropriate footwear on wet surfaces.
  2. Take note of your surroundings; if it appears wet, then it will likely be slick.
  3. Use non-slip strips (like GripStrips) on your stairs and exterior walkways.
  4. Slow down – there’s no need to rush when the weather is bad!  Slow and steady is safer.
  5. Walk where you’re supposed to walk. Shortcuts aren’t the best idea when it’s pouring with rain.
  6. Always wipe your feet when you get indoors.  (We know that sounds obvious, but it really does help!)

On the bright side, we have seen an increase in sales this month due to the very wet weather. This means more people are putting safety at the top of their list and you can too! GripStrips are easy to fix onto wooden surfaces and are resistant to the weather.

  • "Around here, moss grows overnight. It makes everything very slippery. My condo association recently installed Gripstrips on our wooden walkways that get slippery in the winter. They have reduced the number of people falling to ZERO this winter! We place them two feet apart, and it's enough to stop a skid before it becomes a fall. They are the best product ever. (I've used chickenwire stapled down (painful), and composition roof tiles (ugly). GripStrips are attractive and they work!! GREAT PRODUCT!!"

  • "After discovering this product at a consumer tradeshow, I contacted GRIPSTRIP on behalf of a number of Strata Corporations that I manage. These buildings have now used GRIPSTRIPs on exterior wooden stair systems to reduce the likelihood of slip and falls and the product has proven to be very effective. On my personal strata in Whistler, BC, we have used this product on all of our exterior stair systems and the product has proven to work very well with both rain and snow and has been quite durable in spite of constant shoveling of snow from these stairs.
