Like a beautiful reward to surviving winter, Spring is upon us! And that means Spring Break - the perfect time to put the kids to work and start sprucing up your yard for the warmer seasons. With a little elbow grease and inspiration, you can turn inexpensive hardware store items or some of the stuff lying around your property into cool garden accessories.
Here are a few awesome DIY Spring Break projects for the whole family:
Painted Garden Rocks
No purchase necessary! Pick out a few rocks from your property and paint them to create cute little garden friends or cool scenes! Wash the rocks, let them dry, paint with acrylic paints from your local craft store, and finish with a coat of gloss! You can also draw a tic-tac-toe board on an old tree stump and use painted rocks as your X’s and O’s - the possibilities are endless!
Unique Flower Beds
Got any well-loved, oversized toy trucks or diggers that your kids have out-grown? Turn those bad boys into a cool planters using your favourite annuals or succulents.
Or, hang an old tire from a tree branch or elevated porch spindle, fill the bottom with soil and plant away! You can easily get a good bunch of hanging-basket plants to fill it up. For even more appeal, spray paint the old tire to match your house trim or a super-bright colour as an accent! You can also simply lean the tire up against a tree trunk or lay it flat on the ground and plant inside.
Pick up some inexpensive ceramic cups, plates, and platters from the dollar store. Glue the cups inside the plates or platters to create a flower - then paint and hang on the fence for a whimsical, vertical faux garden! You can even cut up an old green garden hose to use as “stems.”
And ... Safety First!
And one last practical idea for Mom and Dad (or any homeowner): Add GripStrips! Great for wooden steps of any kind, it’s time to think beyond the porch. If you have a tiered garden with wooden landscape retaining walls, consider adding strategically-placed GripStrips to allow for easier and safer access to your flower beds.
Happy Spring, everyone!
