Spruce Up Your Steps

Spruce Up Your Steps

There is always that one house you always admire when you walk around your neighbourhood - why not make it yours? There are several easy ways to make your front porch pop.

Paint the entire porch and steps! Make sure to ask your local hardware or paint store about the right paint type for the outdoor space, and how to prep the area properly. Don’t worry if the paint gets a bit scuffed or dirty over time … you can just call it “distressed.” Plus, if you use the right paint and overcoat, you can hose and scrub it when the dirty look gets to be a little much.

If you just can’t bear to paint the whole porch and all of your steps, consider painting the back part of the step only. Painting the riser only can really make your steps pop - try matching the riser colour to your door colour for a cohesive and attractive look.

Another option: Paint just the porch railing, leaving the wood steps to shine in all their natural glory.

Ok, but what if paint is not an option? Spruce up your front steps with circular or square planters at the end of each step. Fill them with colourful annual flowers and actually enjoy walking up to your own front door! You can even fill them with perennial plants like a boxwood for a green look all year-round.

The last step: Give your porch and stairs a good wash at the beginning of the spring/summer season, and keep it tidy with regular sweeping. Keeping the porch clear of clutter is also a quick way to make a huge difference, and you can make it even easier on yourself by adding a cute wooden crate box to throw stuff in.

No matter what you do to pretty up your porch, it has to be safe as well. Adding on a GripStrip to each step will help reduce falls and trips, and with several colours to choose from, you can find the perfect match to complete the look. Find GripStrips here, or at!

Customer Reviews

  • "Around here, moss grows overnight. It makes everything very slippery. My condo association recently installed Gripstrips on our wooden walkways that get slippery in the winter. They have reduced the number of people falling to ZERO this winter! We place them two feet apart, and it's enough to stop a skid before it becomes a fall. They are the best product ever. (I've used chickenwire stapled down (painful), and composition roof tiles (ugly). GripStrips are attractive and they work!! GREAT PRODUCT!!"

  • "After discovering this product at a consumer tradeshow, I contacted GRIPSTRIP on behalf of a number of Strata Corporations that I manage. These buildings have now used GRIPSTRIPs on exterior wooden stair systems to reduce the likelihood of slip and falls and the product has proven to be very effective. On my personal strata in Whistler, BC, we have used this product on all of our exterior stair systems and the product has proven to work very well with both rain and snow and has been quite durable in spite of constant shoveling of snow from these stairs.
