There’s only one time of the year when a popsicle before lunch sounds like a great idea: Summer!
We don’t mean to put a damper on your carefree summer vibe, but according to Stats Canada, summertime comes with a 30 per cent boost in reported injuries as we all flock outside to enjoy our favourite sports and warm-weather hobbies.
The Canadian Paediatric Society has similar reports: At least 29,000 kids under the age of 15 will head to their local ER each year to treat play-related injuries, with most occurring during the summer months (47 per cent). Of those, many are falls and fractures that happen while playing on a playground structure, with the highest-risk age group being kids ages five to nine.
Smaller kids - those ages one to four - are actually most likely to injure themselves on backyard playgrounds with climbing components, slides and swings. About 20 per cent of play-related accidents in this age bracket happen at home in their very own backyard.
Does this mean your kids can’t play? Heck no! Just keep an eye out and stop any super-risky behaviour before an accident happens. If you have an awesome backyard structure your kids love to play on, you can prevent slips and falls by installing Gripstrips in strategic areas to give your kids a little extra grip. This is especially useful if your structure is aging and the wood has been worked smooth by years of happy footfall.
Gripstrips come in several different colours, and you can even mix-and-match to create a colourful pattern to brighten things up! You can find Gripstrips at any of these online and brick-and-mortor locations.
Stay safe and have fun!
