GripStrip's Top Tips For Winter Prep

GripStrip's Top Tips For Winter Prep

Time to stock up on comfort foods and hunker down for another chilly season here on the West Coast! This year’s winter is predicted to be another year of more-than-usual snow fall west of the Rockies. To make sure your hydro bills doesn’t pile up like a massive dump of snow, the experts at HGTV Canada have some great tips to get started on before the real messy weather hits:

  • Tip #1: Clear the Clutter!

Your gutters are perfect little leaf-catchers so get up there before things get too slippery and clear your troughs. Uncleared leaf litter can result in overflowing gutters after a big rain or snow melt, which can lead to leaks inside your home. We’ll take a hard pass on water damage, thanks!

  • Tip #2: Check For Cracks

Inspect for cracks and gaps in your window sealing or you’ll just be pumping all your furnace heat right out the window - literally.

  • Tip #3: Use Your Garage To Actually Park Your Car!

We all do it … just throw all the stuff you don’t know what to do with into the garage but during the winter months, you’ll love hopping right into your car and heading out - no scraping, defrosting and or pre-heating required.

  • Tip #4: Drain Your Hoses

Don’t get hosed by cracked pipes due to freezing. Turn off the water to your hoses from the valve inside your house, then turn the hose on from the outside to bleed whatever is left in the line.

  • Tip #5: Say A Temporary Goodbye To Patio Furniture

It’s so easy to just leave things outside … until spring arrives and you see all the dirt and damage left from months of rain and snow. Pack up your patio furniture, store them somewhere dry or cover them with a tarp, and they’ll last several seasons longer.

  • BONUS!

We’ll add one more awesome tip to the list: Pick up some GripStrips to install on your wooden-plank porch or landscaping steps to reduce slips in wet, icy or snowy conditions. Available at your local hardware stores, GripStrips are the perfect final touch on your winter prep.
